While I was painting these portraits, I got to have a chat with one of the managers of the restaurant who was a Mexican migrant, and she told me about the story of La Calavera Catrina and the subtext of the image. She told me it was originally used as a way to take the piss out of the European upper class and their materialism and makeup, which I found fascinating, especially with how popularised the image has become.
